Supporting Our Farm Community

An often-forgotten industry that is very much ignored in the GTA by governments, is our Farm Community. The Farm community is still strong within the Town of Whitchurch-Stouffville.

Politicians will put great efforts into small to medium and large industrial and commercial size business and how their tax base will help our communities grow and thrive. With Farm taxes low, Politicians do not show support that is needed to sustain the smaller sized farms. Farmers are often left to lease property from Developers, who are waiting to build, to make a descent living. This can change.

There are now, and have been for decades, examples of Conservation Agriculture that will lead to greater yields per hectare, less time spent on fields and less expense to the family farm. Conservation Agriculture will lead to farmland helping to reduce carbon dioxide in our atmosphere, increase good soil content for crops which will lead to reduced water use, and greater retention of rainfall throughout the growing seasons. The Canadian Government has pledged nearly 200 million dollars to help Farmers adopt Conservation Agriculture into their agriculture practices.

As a Certified Arborist with the International Society of Arboriculture, I know how important it is to have healthy soils for trees to grow. This same knowledge can be adopted to soils for crops. Conservation Agriculture will provide the needed nutrients, fungi and bacteria and water that will grow crops that are more resilient to pests and diseases and periods of drought. It will show farmers that less fertilizers are needed, less watering of crops and they will spend less time on the fields which leads to less fuel costs and less use of fossil fuels and more family time.

Before you right this off, as just another politician looking for votes, contact me. I can explain that I have the knowledge and expertise to introduce Conservation Agriculture to the Farm Community of Whitchurch-Stouffville.

I pledge that I will bring this technology to Whitchurch-Stouffville. I will urge the Federal Government to adopt Conservation Agriculture on all Federal Lands that are within the Rouge Park. Canada has signed on to the Paris Accord amendment to include Regenerative, or Conservation Agriculture to help reduce greenhouse gasses and the effects it has on global climate change. Normal agriculture practices can add up to 9% of the total greenhouse gasses around the world. Conservation Agriculture can drastically reduced and even be a carbon sink, helping to reduce greenhouse gasses around the world.

Let’s help our farming community to continue farming and make money while doing it. It can only help us all.
